Volunteering
NCMA was
started by a small group of volunteers in 1977. Since then, the
organisation has grown and now has over 40,000 members and nearly
400 staff.
Volunteers still govern the association and guide its work
through the National Policy Forum.
Over the years, NCMA volunteers have achieved great things for
their fellow professionals. Among their successes, NCMA
volunteers:
- prevented a huge increase in registration fees in England
- removed permission to smoke and smack from the national
standards for childminding in England (pre-EYFS), and ensured that
they were never included in the national minimum standards for
childminding in Wales
- introduced start-up grants for new childminders in England and
Wales
- enabled childminders in England to care for two babies under 12
months
- ensured 4-year-olds in full-time education are counted as
over-5s in childminding ratios
- prevented Ofsted from publishing the names and addresses of all
childminders in England on its website
- changed Ofsted's childcare inspection gradings.
Add to this the great awareness-raising work among other
childcare professionals and parents, and you can see how NCMA's
volunteers really support the work of NCMA.
