Being self-employed
The vast
majority of registered childminders are self-employed and run their
own businesses, although you will need to check your own status as
it will depend on how you work as a childminder. As well as meeting
the requirements of the registering bodies in England and Wales for
childminding, the EYFS or the Foundation Phase, you will need to
make sure you are managing your business correctly.
You will need to register as self-employed with HM Revenue and
Customs when you begin childminding. Contact HMRC’s newly
self-employed helpline on 0845 915 4515 to register or
visit the website where you will find more advice and
online registration.
As you are likely to be a self-employed person it is your
responsibility to keep financial records and complete your own tax
returns. This is known as self-assessment and it is a legal
requirement.
NCMA has negotiated special rules for childminders’
expenses with HM Revenue and Customs.
Support for NCMA members
NCMA publishes a range of factsheets for
members, including ones specifically on tax and finance.
Many childminders use the NCMA Accounts Book to record their
childminding accounts. You can buy a copy in our online shop or
order by calling 0845 880 0044.
