Think about safety

NCMA encourages childminders to consider what is the appropriate level of information to provide on the internet to prospective families.

In some cases, when advertising online it is possible to use location based computer software to pin point the exact location of a setting on an online map.

Furthermore, the publication of a postcode allows interested families to use online map websites to identify the exact location of your setting. This can also enable visitors to gain a bird's-eye view of your property online using tools such as Google Maps.

NCMA recommends that such personal information is only disclosed through trusted sources and to those seeking provision after you have spoken to them personally and it is clear that they are interesting in using your childcare service.

Whilst services such as the Family Information Service (FIS) allow you to include full details of your provision, including your full postal address, you can choose for your full address details not be displayed. Ofsted also have safeguards in place to keep your information private.

You may prefer to provide only basic details of the location such as the borough you are operating in, or first two or three characters of your postcode. This will still help parents and carers know that you provide childcare near them.
