Plans to extend the free entitlement

NCMA has responded to the Government's Extending The Free Early Education Entitlement: Discussion Document on a New Code of Practice.

The Government has said it will offer free early years education over 15 hours per week and 38 weeks per year from September 2010. The responses to this discussion will form a wider consultation on a full Code of Practice in delivering the free entitlement in a flexible way, a full consultation is due in the Autumn.

The principal of a more flexible offer of free early years education is welcomed by NCMA and a formal commitment to ensuring each local authority has a childminding network available to allow as many registered childminders as possible to deliver the free entitlement to childcare.

NCMA is keen to ensure that the term 'robust' childminding network is made clear and that the quality aspect of these networks is not diluted.
