An improving picture for registered childminders in Wales
The National Childminding Association (NCMA) welcomes the recent
publication of the Care and Social Standards Inspectorate for Wales
(CSSIW) Annual Report 2007/2008.
- The Annual Report, which looks at the full circle of care –
commissioning, contracting, care management, provision, leadership
and management –presents a positive picture for registered
childminders. Childminder numbers in Wales are increasing and the
level of training qualifications have also risen:
In March 2008 there were 2,431 childminders (an increase of 26
compared to March 2007).
- 100 per cent of childminding premises were deemed suitable in
terms of the facilities, equipment and environment available to
minded children.
Catrin Fletcher, Director for NCMA Wales said:
“This report from the CSSIW shows childminders’ commitment to
continuing professional development. It is very encouraging that
registered childminders are able to adapt, with 80 per cent
adopting the new requirement to review the quality of care they
provide each year. Almost all registered childminders met the
suitability requirements highlighting that they are a high quality
childcare choice for families in Wales.
Some of the problems highlighted previously with accessing
first-aid training and improving risk management procedures have
also greatly improved showing a really positive picture for
registered childminding. NCMA recognises that there is still room
for improvement and will work with local authorities to ensure
support is provided through Children Come First networks and with
NCMA support at a local level.”
