Children learn something new every day…
…what about you?

One of the most rewarding things about caring for children is watching their excitement as they learn something new, or achieve something for the very first time.

Training has a great deal to offer childminders and nannies, helping you feel more confident in your work and gives you a chance to develop your knowledge and skills.

Plus, research has shown that children do better when those looking after them are better qualified. (EPPE)

Training to become a childminder

All childminders must take an introductory course in home-based childcare, recognised by their local authority, and hold a paediatric first-aid certificate as part of their registration. Training can be done at a college or training centre or via distance learning. NCMA offers an introductory childminding course via e-learning. There's more about necessary introductory training here.

The same course, known as CYPOP5 or Understand how to set up a home-based childcare service can be delivered face-to-face by experienced NCMA childminding tutors - email NCMA at newdiploma@ncma.org.uk to find out where your nearest course is being run.

Prospective childminders should contact their local authority or Family Information Service to check which introductory courses they approve as this may vary between areas. Find out more here.

Training for existing childminders and nannies

For registered childminders, training is essential. Continuous professional development (CPD) is both personally fulfulling and also can help improve your childcare practice, having a positive effect on the achievement of the children you care for. Starting on a training pathway as a childminder can lead you in any number of directions. You could train to be an Early Years Professional, opening doors to work in other childcare settings, or you can use childminding training to become accredited to offer early education places for 3-year-olds.
