Essential training

In England
Childminders in England should attend an introductory childcare
training course and undertake an appropriate paediatric
first-aid training course as set out in the EYFS requirements and
the requirements of the Childcare Register.
If there is no provision for this training in your local
authority, NCMA can help you to understand the requirements of
registration. You can call 0845 880 0044 to talk to a
member of our team or request a callback here.
NCMA recommends that all new childminders and
nannies undertake the unit CYPOP5 "Understand how to set up a
home-based childcare service". It has been developed by the
Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) in conjunction with
NCMA and will equip learners with all the skills they need to set
up a successful childminding business.*
The new level 3 Diploma for the Children and Young People’s
Workforce is now the industry standard qualification. NCMA's
recommended unit forms part of this diploma.
In Wales
Childminders in Wales must complete DHC Unit 1, Introduction to
Childcare Practice (Home-based), before registering with
CSSIW as a childminder. The new level 3 Diploma for the
Children and Young People’s Workforce will be introduced in Wales
from April 2011 and NCMA recommends that new and prospective
childminders undertake the unit CYPOP5 "Understand how to
set up a home-based childcare service" as their introductory
course.*
Childminders in Wales must also hold a paediatric first-aid
qualification before they start caring for children.
