Tutors

Boy and girl playingNCMA employs tutors to deliver accredited and non-accredited training to childminders and nannies.

By becoming a tutor, you can share your knowledge, update your skills, develop your career, and earn a bit of extra money.

Many of NCMA's tutors were once childminders themselves, so they have a great understanding of the specific needs of home-based childcarers.

Childminders make excellent tutors for other childminders. Because it is such a unique job they have the hands-on practical experience and know what it is like to run a childcare business from home.

Susie Vere, a tutor for NCMA, talks about her career.

"I became registered as a childminder in March 2007 when my third child was born.

"Two years later I saw a job advertised at my local council for a childminding network coordinator. Although I decided not to apply, as the role was full time, I did take a note of the essential and desirable criteria. One of these was having the Preparing to Teach in the Lifelong Learning Sector (PTLLS) qualification.

"I had obtained my level 3 diploma in Home-based Childcare and Level 4 Certificate in Early Years Practice by this point, and also had qualifications in business, leadership and management. I saw this as an opportunity to work towards another qualification that would help me when I decided to return to work outside of the home when my children were older.

"Training was something I had done in a previous business role and I'd always enjoyed it. As if by pure chance during the PTLLS course I saw an advertisement for NCMA tutors in my area. I applied to become a tutor and was successful. I've tutored several workshops, including behaviour management, self evaluation, planning and assessment.

"I am still a registered childminder and look after a child one day a week. I am continuing my own studies with the Foundation Degree in Children and Young Peoples Services and continue to tutor for NCMA. Highlights of being a tutor include being able to fit this in with my childminding business and children as I tutor courses at evenings and weekends. I also get positive feedback from childminders who like the fact I am a registered childminder as well and immediately have the ability to understand their point of view."
